digital nomad working outdoors

The world is opening up for the growing number of founders, investors, and entrepreneurs operating from abroad – there are now over 50 countries with digital nomad visas (DNVs) that allow globally-minded individuals to explore new territories without needing to set up a new office. With these modern arrangements, professionals can scale their start-up or build an international business portfolio anywhere, from the heart of the Balkans to a beachfront penthouse in Rio.

With so many countries emerging as digital nomad locations, it can be hard to know where to set sail for. You may already have a particular city in mind, but if your curiosity knows no bounds, we have some suggestions below.

Firstly, there are some considerations you should weigh up to ensure you make the right decision:

  • Digital nomad infrastructure – is there widespread, fast Wi-Fi, dedicated spaces for remote working?
  • Career opportunities – is there a potential new customer base, and a network of industry peers to help keep your skills and knowledge up to date?
  • Climate – do you thrive in the heat, or are you more at home in fresh, Nordic air?
  • Application process – each country has its own eligibility rules for securing a DNV, with some, such as Romania, catering to a wide audience, while others like Norway, require a higher income and closer local business ties.
  • Transport links – how easily can you travel for meetings? Is there an international airport, a marina for yachts, or a reliable chauffeur service?
  • Culture – are you a foodie, art lover, or sports fanatic? Do you prefer a hike on the weekend or exploring the nightlife?

With these factors in mind, let’s look at some of the best countries and best cities for digital nomads.

Portugal

With Lisbon and Porto frequently placing in the top ten of the world’s best digital nomad cities, Portugal should be a consideration for everyone. It has a high quality of life, fantastic climate, and a wealth of culture and history. Lisbon has become a global hub for entrepreneurs, particularly in tech, so the possibilities for networking and scaling up are vast.

Portugal’s digital nomad visas allow you to stay temporarily for up to three years, with the option to apply for longer-term and permanent residency, further boosting Portugal’s reputation as one of the best countries for digital nomads. Applicants must have a minimum monthly income of €3,480, sufficient savings and proof of self-employment or other contract outside Portugal.

Top cities

Lisbon – networking, thriving culture, nightlife, Michelin-star dining

Porto – laid-back lifestyle, art, local heritage

Malaysia

With its fast-growing economy, Malaysia is an exciting place to be right now, and a great strategic base for expansion into ASEAN markets. Cities like the capital, Kuala Lumpur, have a modern infrastructure and English-speaking business sector that makes comfortable living and remote working viable. Of course, the incredible scenery, tropical climate, and delicious food are also a big plus.

Malaysia has one of the easiest digital nomad visas to apply for, with an entirely online process and the option to live in the country for up to two years. There are no restricted nationalities, and the minimum required monthly income is $2,000 USD.

Top cities

Kuala Lumpur – modern infrastructure, international connections, nightlife

Penang – coastal living, history, culture, cuisine capital

Brazil

A recent adopter of digital nomad visas, Brazil is a great option for those with an adventurous spirit. Famously one of the most naturally diverse and beautiful countries in the world, Brazil also has excellent infrastructure for remote working in buzzy melting pots like São Paulo, one of the world’s best cities for digital nomads.  You may choose to visit for a taste of the country-wide Carnival each February/March, or the São Paulo F1 Grand Prix in November, but no matter the dates, there’s no shortage of world-class dining, entertainment and fellow entrepreneurs to connect with.

Brazil’s digital nomad visas are for one year, with an option to renew for one more year. They require a minimum monthly income of $1,500 USD, and that your work is based outside of Brazil.

Top cities

São Paulo– business capital, networking, international connectivity

Brasilia – capital city, modernist architecture, mild climate

Florianopolis – beaches, laid-back, large digital nomad community

Croatia

A fantastic option for connectivity across EU countries, Croatia also has the benefit of a Mediterranean climate and coastline and a rich history. Popular destinations like Split and Dubrovnik lie on the coast, where luxury seaside properties and hotels are in abundance, while the capital Zagreb is inland, with many of the best museums and galleries in the country, as well as a thriving start-up scene.

DNVs in Croatia are available to non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals with a monthly income of at least €3,295, and are granted for up to 18 months. With the community quickly growing, this is no doubt one of the best digital nomad visas available.

Top cities

Split – large digital nomad community, strong digital infrastructure, coastal Mediterranean lifestyle

Zagreb – capital city, culture, history, less busy tourist season, growing entrepreneur community for networking opportunities

Spain

Spain is as popular for digital nomads as it is for tourists, and for good reason: the country’s DNV has a very generous limit of up to five years and allows for family members to accompany the applicant. There’s a huge variety between the many historic cities and regions of the country, from the Basque Country to the Balearic Islands, so it’s an appealing choice for those who like to stay on the move. The country’s historic ties to Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas make it a melting pot of international trade and business, providing ample networking opportunities.

Spain’s DNV requirements include a non-EU/EEA nationality, employment outside of the country, a university degree or three years’ professional experience and minimum monthly earnings of €3,000.

Top cities

Barcelona – thriving culture, international hub, great networking, digital infrastructure

Madrid – business capital, historic culture, international connections

Valencia – laid-back, beach culture, growing community

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and there are many more countries with digital nomad visas on offer for the adventurous entrepreneur. But with these pins in your map, many more digital nomad locations will come into your range, as well as endless opportunities for business, career and network growth.

If your business is growing and in need of additional full or part-time employees, our recruiters are ready to help. Get in touch with your requirements today. We also offer an Employer of Record service if you are looking to hire employees abroad.

  • Address: 6–8 Blandford Street (just off Marylebone High Street), London W1U 4AU
  • Website: josephinebistro.com
  • Opening: April 2025, by Michelin-starred chefs Claude & Lucy Bosi; the second Josephine after their Chelsea original

Josephine is a refined Parisian brasserie transported to Marylebone. It blends classic French bistro cooking, with roots in Lyon and inspiration from Paris, with a strong focus on British seafood. Expect dishes like steak tartare, moules mariniere, trout au beurre rouge, soufflé au Camembert, oysters, and langoustines. The wine menu is equally thoughtful, with Loire Valley and Bordeaux highlights and a stellar vintage Champagne selection

Founded by Claude & Lucy Bosi, whose Chelsea bistro became a hit, Josephine in Marylebone aims to evoke both warmth and refined Parisian brasserie culture. The interior, designed by Fabled Studio, features burgundy leather seating, antique mirrors, Impressionist-inspired art and soft lighting, creating a cosy yet stylish dining room, plus a dedicated oyster bar and a 16-seat terrace.

The Food & Drink

  • Starters: Highlights include fresh, delicate mussels (moules marinières) and classic steak tartare. Both exemplary in authenticity, seasoning and freshness, especially for diners well-versed in French cuisine
  • Wine & Bubbles: We enjoyed the house Champagne (a fine vintage-style highlight) and a beautiful Sancerre, which paired beautifully with our meal. The broader quality wine list, including Loire and Bordeaux selections, is overseen by a highly knowledgeable sommelier who enhanced our experience
  • Typical mains and sharing dishes: Alongside the mussels and tartare, the a‑la‑carte menu features trout in red wine butter sauce, Dover sole meunière, and generous seafood platters (including fruits de mer). The lunch plat du jour is attractively priced (£16.50 on weekdays); weekend Menu Duval offers two courses for £24.50, three for £29.50

The Venue & Service

Set on a quiet corner off Marylebone High Street, the bistro offers multiple seating zones—from the main dining room and oyster bar to a private back room and a leafy terrace. The sommelier service is smart and unobtrusive, guiding wine choices with confidence. The ambience strikes a balance between relaxed daytime comfort and the potential for romantic evening charm.

Verdict

Our group, many of whom have spent extensive time in France, felt the food was extraordinarily authentic—some even called it the best French cuisine they’ve had outside of France.

The combination of fresh mussels, classic steak tartare,  house Champagne, and a fine Sancerre made for a memorable lunch. The wine list and sommelier stood out as a real asset.

Josephine is ideal for a business lunch or informal get‑together, yet with its tailored interiors and wine bar, it could just as easily transform into a romantic evening date‑night venue. We’ll definitely be returning!

Nanny with three children prepare for Easter.

Finding the right private staff for your household or family office goes beyond assessing skills and experience. It’s just as important to ensure they align with your lifestyle, household dynamics, and expectations. That’s why many private employers choose a temp-to-perm (TTP) hiring model—allowing them to trial a candidate before offering a permanent contract. A survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that nearly 50% of temporary workers transitioned to permanent positions within the organisations they were assigned to, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach in securing committed employees.

Why Choose TTP for Private Staff?

Ensure the Right Fit

A trial period lets you assess how a staff member integrates with your household, interacts with existing staff, and handles responsibilities before making a long-term commitment.

Flexibility Without the Admin Burden

If a candidate isn’t the right match, you can adjust your staffing needs quickly. As your Employer of Record, we handle payroll, HR administration, and compliance, meaning you avoid the complexities of setting up contracts, taxes, and benefits.

Adjust Working Hours as Needed

Hiring on a temporary basis allows you to fine-tune schedules and workloads before committing to a full-time hire. Whether it’s determining the required hours for a housekeeper or trialling a private PA’s support level, TTP hiring provides valuable flexibility.

Quick Replacements When Needed

If a candidate isn’t the right fit, we can provide an alternative, ensuring minimal disruption to your household or family office operations.

Key Roles That Benefit from a TTP Approach

Housekeepers

A housekeeper plays a vital role in maintaining a home’s cleanliness and organisation, but every household has different standards and preferences. A trial period allows you to assess:

  • Their attention to detail and ability to meet household expectations.
  • How well they integrate with existing staff and daily routines.
  • Their level of discretion and professionalism in a private setting.

Butlers

A butler is responsible for a household’s formal service, front-of-house management, and guest hospitality. The right fit depends on factors like:

  • Experience with formal service protocols or specific household traditions.
  • Ability to manage staff, oversee events, and cater to personal preferences.
  • Adaptability to the household’s pace, lifestyle, and guests.

Private Chefs

Food is deeply personal, and hiring a private chef requires more than just reviewing a CV. A TTP approach allows you to:

  • Ensure their cooking style aligns with your family’s dietary needs and tastes.
  • Assess their ability to plan menus, source ingredients, and adapt to preferences.
  • Determine if their personality and discretion suit your household.

Nannies

Hiring a nanny is one of the most personal staffing decisions for any household. A trial period helps ensure:

  • Their childcare approach aligns with your parenting style.
  • They build a strong and comfortable bond with your children.
  • Their schedule and adaptability work within your household’s routine.

Private PAs

A Private PA manages personal affairs, travel, and household administration, requiring a high level of trust and efficiency. A TTP period allows you to:

  • Test their ability to manage sensitive information discreetly.
  • Assess their efficiency in organising schedules, handling logistics, and coordinating with other staff.
  • Ensure their communication style aligns with your expectations.

By opting for a TTP arrangement, you gain peace of mind, flexibility, and ease of hiring – all without the administrative burden of payroll and compliance.

Round library (Public Library of Stockholm, Observatorielunden), with hundreds of books on shelves.

September 6th marks National Read a Book Day and, if you’re anything like us, it’s the perfect excuse to work through that ever-growing pile sitting on your bedside table. Tiger has made a commitment to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace, so we’re focusing on five incredible fiction and non-fiction books from authors of underrepresented groups for you to sink your teeth into.

Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race – Reni Eddo-Lodge

One of the better-known books on this list, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race has been heralded as “the black British bible”, “one of the most important books of 2017” and “the book that’s changing how we talk about race”, to name a few. First published in 2017, the lessons remain poignant and essential for those who don’t experience racism, prejudice and disadvantage daily.

Eddo-Lodge, a black British woman, opens the novel by taking the reader through the UK’s involvement in slavery to contemporary incidents of racial violence from police and others. While the recounting is brutal and confronting at times, it’s essential learning if you’re not already aware of the details. She uses her personal experiences to talk to issues of white fragility, systemic racism, the intersection of race, classism and feminism and the fear of black people in Britain. Throughout, readers will be shocked and horrified, but will also begin to critically analyse the systems they have passively lived with (and, most likely, benefitted from) their entire lives.

Our copy had been updated in 2018 with a new chapter – ‘Aftermath’, explaining where the book fitted into the political climate at the time of publication. Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and a leaning towards the far right (and an increased hostility towards underrepresented groups) in many countries around the world all had their effects on how the novel was received. She also updates readers on the real-world examples used throughout the book and the novel’s initial reception. Since publishing her initial blog post, which became the book, she hasn’t been able to stop talking to white people about race. However, she acknowledges her (and our) place in the life-long movement for ending racism.

This novel was the first that we discussed in our book club, and it was a fantastic (if extremely difficult) introduction to the systems, barriers and prejudices that people of colour experience daily.

Homecoming: voices of the Windrush Generation – Colin Grant

In this incredible collection of stories from nearly 200 people, Colin Grant takes the readers through a journey of discovery and understanding of the Windrush Generation.

The term, commonly known as Windrush, refers to the Caribbean citizens who arrived in England between 1948 and 1971.

Originally published in 2019, this book shares interviews of people from different backgrounds, all united by their lives in the same country: England. Colin Grant tells the stories of nurses, teachers, and bus drivers now in their late age, who describe their experience of coming to England between the late 1940s and early 1960s. Grant dives into the lives of people from Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and other countries in the West Indies, who struggled to build entirely new foundations for a life in the face of discrimination and other extraordinary challenges.

From adjusting to the cold weather, to struggling to find jobs or even a place to live these stories are equal parts heart-breaking and eye-opening.

Every page of the book contains life lessons and provides an education on the history of the people who helped to rebuild England after WW2.

Between the World and Me – Ta-Nehisi Coates

Between the World and Me is a book by black author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who grew up in West Baltimore in the 1980’s. The novel is written in the form of a letter to his 15-year-old son which opens the window into their personal relationship.

He starts the letter by recounting, “last Sunday, the host of a popular news show asked me what it meant to lose my body”. During a news segment where he was being interviewed, he attempted to explain that American law and government was built on the abuse of black people (their bodies, land and wealth). He also pointed out that these institutions have only ever considered white men. When the news anchor goes on to talk about a hopeful future (using a photograph of a black child hugging a white police officer as proof of some harmonious utopia), he knows he has failed in getting his point across.

Throughout the letter, he references lessons his son has learnt from police brutality and murders against black people, alongside Coates’ personal experiences, to bring into focus the wider systemic disadvantage that young black people face in the US. He details his experiences with his parents growing up (when his father would discipline him harshly to try to deter him from getting involved in activities where the police would be involved), the fear he felt from the black boys growing in his neighbourhood, and how he first saw a gun flashed at him aged 11.

The book talks about the distance between the world he grew up in and the one he saw white children and families experience. While reconciling these two worlds is hard, it’s something that he attempts throughout the novel. He also details his formative years at Howard University in Washington D.C. and his experience of fatherhood.

A New York Times bestseller, and hailed as “required reading”, this novel is an extremely powerful account of race in America for everyone, not just those living in the US.

A Single Man – Christopher Isherwood

A work of fiction published in 1964, A Single Man follows a day in the life of a middle-aged gay professor in LA after his partner passes away suddenly. He is driven to suicidal thoughts, but ultimately changes his mind when he connects with old and new friends. This short novel (186 pages) was also adapted into a film in 2009 starring Colin Firth.

The novel could almost be autobiographical in parts, as the protagonist, George, is a British man who is teaching at a university in California. Isherwood was also a gay man, born near Manchester, who relocated to the US and taught at California State University, Los Angeles. The story is relatable to anyone who has felt a mundane loneliness. Alongside this struggle, George faces prejudice due to his sexuality in a culture that doesn’t accept him or the love he shared with his partner.

This novel is definitely a worthwhile read. Despite it being written and published in the 1960’s, it’s an important reminder to never forget how hostile and dangerous the world was and continues to be for LGBTQ+ people.

We Should All Be Feminists – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

We Should All Be Feminists, first a TEDx Talk watched by over 6.2 million people, is now an essay on modern feminism and gender equality by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. In less than 50 pages, she clearly outlines the benefits to both women and men becoming feminists by touching on issues like sexism in the workplace, gender expectations (how they hurt men and women) and rape culture.

Adichie uses personal anecdotes from growing up in Nigeria and her first, negative exposure to the word ‘feminist’. She also recalls a journalist advising her that she should never identify herself as a feminist, as they are only women who are unhappy because they can’t find husbands. She highlights the baggage the word ‘feminist’ must endure, including the common trope of a man-hating, bra-burning woman who shuns all traditions. This is just one of the many false ideas of a feminist she dispels in the novel.

Accessible and easy-to-read, the book is a fantastic first step for anyone who wants to learn more about feminism. She aims to not only convert those who criticise feminism, but also to strengthen the arguments of feminists who want to enlighten those around them. Since its release, the novel has been widely distributed as essential reading, with every 16-year-old Swedish student given the novel in 2015 and a local bookstore in Portland giving away copies for free during a protest against Trump’s inauguration.

House manager making a call

The private recruitment market has witnessed significant shifts throughout 2024. Lydia Charlesworth, Manager of Tiger Private, provides expert insights on the key hiring trends observed in Q3 and expectations looking ahead to Q4.

Recovering Market

The beginning of the year saw slower movement, with fewer roles available to jobseekers than usual. However, in recent months, there has been a noticeable shift, with an influx in job opportunities across all sectors that indicates a recovering market.

One significant trend is the rise in demand for round-the-clock private support due to employers’ international travel commitments. Although these demands pose challenges for staff, some households and family offices have adopted rotational schedules (e.g. two weeks on followed by two weeks off) to avoid staff burnout.

Political Changes

The run-up to the UK general election caused some uncertainty, making some jobseekers cautious to change roles and many families tentative to recruit. Yet, with the results now in and the prospect of a period of political stability on the horizon, we have seen a positive increase in confidence from those who have recommenced hiring. We are also seeing more top-level senior staff seeking career advancement, including chiefs of staff, executive assistants and private PAs.

UK Staffing Requests

Over the summer holiday season, we saw plenty of international movement and temporary hires as families staffed secondary residences abroad. However, as we transition into the autumn and families return from their holidays, we are noticing a promising rise in staffing requests for UK-based roles.

Expert Hiring Guidance

Employers can greatly benefit from seeking expert guidance when restructuring staff or relocating family offices. Ensuring proper staff structure and coverage without causing burnout is crucial. We provide a consultative service to improve your household or family office’s structure to optimise time and money, ensuring the seamless functioning of your private staff.

Tiger Private also provides an enhanced payroll service to relieve you of administrative onboarding processes. Depending on the extent of your needs, this can encompass reference checks, background checks, drafting employment contracts, setting up payroll and more. Contact us to find out more about our enhanced payroll offer, available in both the UK and across Europe.

Are you considering a career as a private nanny?

There are fewer more rewarding jobs than caring for children. Working alongside parents, nannies have a direct hand in raising their charges from infancy through to early school days, seeing the fruits of their hard work as the children mature.

But make no mistake – it is hard work, and it takes a certain personality to be a great private nanny. We spoke to one of our most experienced private nannies about the lessons she learnt in her time caring for many children of different ages.

Read on for her invaluable insights into this challenging, but hugely fulfilling role.

Work with an agency

As a new nanny, signing up with a recruitment agency is a must. A nanny recruitment agency is a trusted source of job opportunities, and can protect you from unscrupulous employers.

Our expert observed, “I always tell them to go to an agency first” as it “allows you to feel safe” having a third party involved. An agency can be especially useful if you’re working abroad, as “you have a touch point back at home if something goes wrong”.

Keep a professional distance

It’s only natural to feel emotionally involved with the families you’re working for, especially if it’s a long-term arrangement. But, as our expert found out for herself, it’s important not to become so attached that the personal and professional boundaries blur. Her advice is to strive to be “a much valued, financially appreciated member of staff”.

Set boundaries and look after your health

Caring for children as a career can be a very intense experience and, as our expert notes, “even a low-key nanny job is still a 12-hour day”. Employers with busy lives will also often require last-minute cover or additional hours; she relates there have been many times when she has “had to tell a friend ‘I’m so sorry, I’m stuck at work’”.

To avoid this disruption to your personal life, be sure to talk with your employers before you start a new job. Set clear boundaries about the hours you work, and the overtime you’re willing to do.

Have an endless supply of activities

A lot of your time as a nanny will be spent keeping the children entertained. So, it’s important to always have something fun up your sleeve, no matter the situation: “typically what I do is an AM activity and PM, especially when children are still napping”.

It’s good to include both indoor and outdoor activities to best engage the children throughout the day: “The inward bound could be messy play or craft, outward bound would be National Trust property, things like that.”

Be nurturing

Being in close contact with children at such a formative time in their lives means you can have a huge and positive impact on their development. The activities you do and attitudes you instil in them can help create healthy, happy and curious children.

Our experienced nanny is a “big believer in time outdoors, time in nature” and reading: “children should read independently and also be read to”.

Talk with your family to determine what values they wish their children to take on as they grow, and always keep these in mind when planning how the children will spend their time with you.

When it comes to hiring for a private household, a private chef can be an invaluable addition. However,  hiring a private chef in London or internationally can be a complex process with a number of elements to consider. From figuring out the correct salary and hours, to catering to your family’s dietary requirements, finding the right fit is essential.

Tiger Private works with a wide range of private chefs who are available for one-off events, weekends, seasons or in a permanent, full-time capacity. With varying responsibilities and experience, it’s vital to understand what you’re looking for, what you expect of your chef and the level of culinary prowess your family expects on a day-to-day basis.

What is a Personal Chef?

A personal chef is, in short, a qualified chef that you can hire on a temporary or permanent basis to cook bespoke meals for you and your family, or for an event, holiday or other special occasion. The main benefits of hiring a private chef are:

  1. You remove the need to cook, saving valuable time that can be allocated
  2. A personal chef uses their expertise to source, prepare and serve restaurant-quality meals in the comfort of your own home or chosen location
  3. Personal chefs can come up with balanced, nutritional meal plans in accordance with your preferences or dietary requirements, ensuring that you’re looking after your health, and eating tasty meals

Private Domestic Chef

Private domestic chefs work for one client or several, on a part-time or full-time basis. If they’re working for one client full-time, they will often also live on the Principal’s estate. Hiring a private domestic chef allows for a truly customised meal plan, and completely removes the stress and time taken from preparing multiple meals a day.

Restaurant Chef

A restaurant chef works in a professional kitchen and is trained to prepare meals to a high standard. Private chefs usually have several years of experience working in demanding restaurant environments, often in fine dining. This means that private chefs are extremely capable of working to tight deadlines and above-and-beyond requests.

Why hire a private chef?

A private chef is becoming an increasingly popular option for busy UHNW individuals and families. Hiring a private chef for the night for a dinner party can take the stress out of catering, while hiring a private chef for a weekend – perhaps during shooting season – means your family can focus on more important activities!

A private chef can also assist when catering to complex dietary requirements or eating behaviours. If your Principal or a family member has allergies, eats a restricted diet or simply prefers one cuisine over another, having a private chef can make a huge difference – they can design menus, source ingredients and prepare meals with your Principal’s needs in mind.
